What We Need:
Obagi is seeking a forward-thinking and innovative Packaging Engineer to lead the development and execution of high-performance packaging solutions across Obagi brands. Responsible for overseeing the end-to-end packaging process for new and existing products - from design, testing, sustainability initiatives, and specifications to vendor coordination and production readiness - the Packaging Engineer will collaborate with internal teams to deliver best-in-class packaging that aligns with brand positioning, business needs, and regulatory compliance.

What We Need:

Responsible for overseeing the end-to-end packaging process for new and existing products - from design, testing, sustainability initiatives, and specifications to vendor coordination and production readiness - the Packaging Engineer will collaborate with internal teams to deliver best-in-class packaging that aligns with brand positioning, business needs, and regulatory compliance.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead end-to-end development of primary and secondary packaging for new product launches and sustaining projects.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure packaging meets marketing objectives, technical requirements, regulatory guidelines, and cost targets.
- Create and maintain packaging component specifications, bill of materials (BOM), and technical drawings.
- Plan and coordinate package testing including compatibility, transit, stability, and safety.
- Collaborate with suppliers and contract manufacturers (CMOs) to identify materials, evaluate component feasibility, and resolve technical challenges.
- Conduct line trials, tooling reviews, and packaging validations to ensure smooth production scale-up.
- Provide innovative packaging solutions to enhance consumer experience, reduce environmental impact, and increase product protection.
- Support packaging-related artwork development and review for accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Troubleshoot post-launch packaging issues and identify process improvement opportunities.
- Remain up to date on industry trends, technologies, sustainability innovations, and competitive benchmarking.
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related field required.
- At least 3-5+ years of relevant experience in cosmetics, personal care, or pharmaceutical packaging environment
- Strong understanding of packaging manufacturing processes, material properties (plastics, glass, paperboard, etc.), and performance testing methodologies
- Working knowledge of sustainability requirements and recyclability standards (e.g., ARP guidelines, PCR use, EPR laws)
- Familiarly with regulatory standards such as FDA, cGMP, ISO 22715, and EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009
- Exceptional organizational and prioritization/time management skills; demonstrated ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Comfortable operating in a fast paced, ever-changing environment; someone who thrives in ambiguity and adapts quickly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other technologies including 2D/3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, ArtiosCAD) and specification management systems.
- Availability to travel up to 10% of the time as needed
